Ibeat Kate home by five minutes.

It was fortuitous and perhaps the result of my disregard for road safety, but it meant I had a head start to get to Beau and beg him not to tell Kate I lied about needing to stay at the cabin.

I’d just gotten her on my side, and as much as I wished she’d want to continue... whatever we’d been doing, I didn’t want to lose the friendship we carved out in the peace of two nights in that cabin.

Thankfully, Beau was in the living room fumbling with wrapping paper and muttering curses next to the Christmas tree when I threw open the front door.

“Holy shit. I thought you’d be frozen under the ice or chopped up like firewood by now.”

Beau flicked his hand to get a piece of tape off as the other hand held the paper over a box.

“Nice to see you survived. I’m honestly shocked you risked staying when you could have—”

I held up my hands, not bothering to remove my shoes, before moving closer and lowering my voice.

“About that. Uh, Kate didn’t realize the roads were open with chains. I made a judgment call.” That worked out pretty great. “So, if we could keep it between us, that’d be appreciated.”

Beau’s eyes lit up, those ridiculous blonde eyebrows squeezing together with his amusement. He whistled low.

“Oh, my friend. Nice knowing you.”

He went back to his package as he chuckled. About two seconds later, he stilled, his eyes slowly lifting.

“Wait. Why did you make that judgment call?”

Jesus. The living room was hot. “Uh.”

Beau let go of the wrapping paper, pointing his finger at me. “Did you and Kate—”

“No!” I exclaimed, lying because… hell, I didn’t know at that point, other than I’d been lying to either get to Kate or get away from my feelings about her. There was no reason to stop now.

“I just wanted the chance to apologize for our shitty childhood behavior and be friends for a minute.”

And we had been. For several minutes, actually. Until we were maybe more.

Beau didn’t need the details.

He sighed, staring at the messy work in front of him. “Dammit. I lost my place.” He shook his head. “You guys kiss and make up?”

And then some.

“We came to an agreement about acting like adults.”

Doing some adult things.

“All right. Well, that’s good. It will probably make her more tolerable over the holidays. She can be a real pain in the ass.”

An understatement.

“She’s also pretty cool, though,” I said, reaching down to unlace my boots. I stopped midway, catching Beau’s heavy eyes.

He tilted his head, assessing. “Are you sure—”

“What the hell?” Kate burst through the door, panting and wild-eyed. “How did you beat me back?”

The living room heated another one thousand degrees with her presence.

I unzipped my jacket and tossed it over the back of the couch, rolling up my sleeves before settling in my seat. “I’m fast.”

Kate traced a finger over her lips, shrugging one shoulder. “A little too fast.”

Her eyes gleamed with that playful mischief I was coming to love.
